Queenstown Car Rental

Queenstown accommodation

One of the best ways to truly appreciate Queenstown and the surrounding district is to drive yourself in a rental car and Queenstown has both national car hire, and local car hire firms available.A great system to compare Queenstown car rental rates.

The just book and pay once you hire the car. Choose where you want to rent from and drop off the car. One option is to hire a car at Christchurch airport and drive to Queenstown which takes about 5 hours.

The most common place for hiring a car is at the Airport so it makes sense that most of the national car rental places in New Zealand have an agency office at Queenstown Airport. These include Hertz, Avis, Budget Rental, Europcar, and Thrifty. All of these offices can be found in the terminal building of the airport itself. Thrifty, Hertz, Avis and Budget rental also have offices in the Queenstown downtown district.

If you are planning to drive during the winter months then make sure the car that you hire comes equipped with snow chains and if you are planning to visit some of the ski resorts then it is a good idea to try and hire a 4WD vehicle as some of the roads to the resorts can be quite rough and impassable at times in a standard car. Another thing to watch is the distances you travel. Firstly because a lot of companies charge extra for mileage and secondly because 24 hour petrol stations are not commonplace in New Zealand, particularly outside of larger townships. Plan your trips carefully and make sure you always gas up when you pass an open petrol station because you can never be sure how far away the next one will be.
