Skippers Canyon

Queenstown accommodation

Just getting to Skippers Canyon is an experience in itself. The road, built in the late 1800s was done in four different sections and was considered and engineering masterpiece in its time; but even if you don’t notice how spectacular that is, the scenery will take your breath away.

The Canyon itself is about 30kms from Queenstown and there are plenty of stops along the way where you can take photos and admire the view. Skippers Canyon was part of the goldmining area and it is estimated that at its peak more than 5,000 miners were working the area for their slice of riches before the big companies came in. However the big companies didn’t last long because of the logistics of getting the gold and so the rush came to an end.

The highlight for many on this trip is the Skippers Bridge. The bridge itself is 100m long and it is suspended 90m above the Shotover River – secured by the original 14 wire ropes used in its construction. To travel across it is like travelling back in time. And don’t forget to try out the café at Skipper’s Point. It is part of the Mount Aurum Conservation Area and they make some lovely home-made cheeses there. Tours are available from Queenstown that includes morning tea, photo stops and chances to walk around.
